Eaton Township Fire Department:
The Eaton Township Fire Department was founded in October 1944 in response to the community's loss by fire of a church and a residence. The original 28 members began fighting fires with buckets and shovels. In 1979, the department became the Eaton Township Fire and Rescue Department when it began providing Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Through the years, the community has grown and the volume of emergency calls has increased to over 550 per year. The department is comprised of over thirty male and female members. All personnel are state certified and go through continuing education to hone their skills in order to better serve their community.
The EMS side of the department provides on scene life-saving care and ambulance transportation. Patients may be transported to one of four hospitals: EMH Regional Medical Center, Allen Memorial, Southwest General, and St. John's West Shore. The station is staffed with two EMS personnel Monday through Friday from 6 am to 6 pm and on Saturday from 7 am to 4 pm. The department utilizes two ambulances and the personnel roster boasts eight Emergency Medical Technician Basics (EMT-B), four Emergency Medical Technician Intermediates (EMT-I), and eight Paramedics (EMT-P). There were 375 emergency medical calls last year.
Last year, the fire side of the department responded to 172 calls including burning complaints, structural fires, and motor vehicle accidents (MVA). The department has five apparatus: two engines, a 3,500 gallon capacity tanker, a grass fire truck, and an equipment truck.
Main financial support for all Eaton Township emergency services is provided through levies. The Eaton Township Fire and Rescue Association holds an annual chicken barbecue and an annual golf outing to raise funds to provide special equipment and to cover other needs of the department.
The non-emergency phone number for the Eaton Township Fire Department is (440) 748-2496.
