Planning for the Quality of Life in Your Community
A working session on how local government officials may improve the quality of life in their community through land use planning, zoning, and community and economic development planning
9:00-9:30 Welcome, Introductions & Session Overview
9:30-10:45 Overview of the Planning and Zoning Process: A speaker from the American Planning Association will share his expertise on the legal issues, roles/responsibilities of those involved in the planning process, and how planning can affect change in a community.
10:45-Noon Rural Community Survival and fiscal impact: This session will focus on developing community and economic development initiatives. Participants will examine the potential for strategic planning efforts in their community. Session will draw upon case studies and development scenarios. Specifically, this session will look at each communitys strengths and weaknesses and how those will affect the long-term health of my community. .Also, a demonstration using computer software that calculates fiscal impacts of development, including marginal benefits and costs, controlling for tax incentives and employment effects.
Streamlining Zoning Enforcement: One of the most important aspects of the land use process is enforcement. This session will focus on developing zoning enforcement policies and improving enforcement techniques. In addition, sample letters and forms will be provided.
12:00-1:15 Lunch: provided by the Center for Public Management & Regional Affairs
1:15-2:30 An Overview of Economic Development Opportunities: A speaker from the Ohio Department of Development will share information on specific programs, grants, and loans that may be available to your community.
2:30-2:45 Break
2:45-4:00 Community Image Visual Preference Survey: Participate in a model visual preference survey and learn how this process may be applied to your community. What types of land uses enhance the attractiveness of communities? Slide show of various images regarding community livability.
